Virtual Slide

Virtual Slide

A 'virtual' or digital slide provides a new way of viewing and sharing microscopy specimens. This technology has enormous benefits in education where every student can view the same slide at the same time.

Entire glass-mounted specimens, or specific areas of interest on the slide, can be digitized at all desired magnifications to reproduce traditional microscope observations. Resulting 'virtual' slides are of diagnostic quality.

A web server equipped with a set of digital slides is an economic way of distributing a standard set of microscope slides to students. Each student has access to exactly the same information, making the teaching of slide interpretation much easier. Virtual slides never fade or break and can be accessed from a PC, via a local area network or the Internet. There is no longer any need to look through a microscope eyepiece to discuss particular specimens with colleagues. Digital slide technologies also facilitate slide storage and archiving, making it easier for instructors to compile slide sets matched to each teaching situation.

Key microscopy techniques related virtual slides include brightfield, digital imaging, digital slide and telepathology.
